What Is A Burial Funeral?

A burial funeral is a traditional ceremony where the deceased is laid to rest in the ground, typically within a cemetery or burial ground.
Burial offers the ability for your loved one to be laid to rest alongside a loved one, in a companion or family plot.

This service is often chosen for its sense of tradition, permanence, and the opportunity it provides for family and friends to say a final goodbye in a meaningful and respectful way.

Burial Service

A burial service can be tailored to reflect the life, values, and wishes of the deceased. The service before burial can take place at a church or cemetery. Traditionally, the mourners arrive and are seated in the church before the funeral procession arrives. The coffin will be carried down the aisle and carefully placed on the catafalque, which is a raised box or platform at the head of the chapel.

The minister leads the service and will include readings, hymns, and prayers, which you can choose to personalise the service.

At the end of the service, the coffin is then transported to the graveside for the committal, with prayers and readings.

A burial service typically lasts between 20 minutes and one hour. A Church of England service typically lasts between 30 minutes and one hour, and a Catholic service lasts between 40 minutes and two hours, depending on the type of service chosen by the family.

The Burial Committal

For a burial, the committal is the process of lowering the coffin into the ground with additional prayers and readings said at this final moment.

Family members may wish to scatter soil or flowers into the grave if they wish.

After the mourners have left, the grave will be carefully and respectfully filled.

Graveside Memorials

Burial funerals provide a permanent location where loved ones can visit to pay their respects, reflect, and find solace.

Burial grounds often offer peaceful, serene environments that provide comfort to grieving families.

Graveside memorials can include headstones, statues, or sculptures. Still, whilst the choice of the headstone and what is on it is yours to make the deceased’s family, it will also need to be in line with the rules and regulations of the cemetery.
