What Is A Cremation Funeral?

Cremation is a dignified and respectful method of laying a loved one to rest and is the most popular type of funeral in the UK.

Cremation is chosen by many families for its simplicity, flexibility, and personal significance. Cremation is also an environmentally conscious choice, requiring less land than a traditional burial.

It involves the process of reducing the body to ashes through the application of intense heat within a specially designed cremation chamber.

Cremation Service

Crematoriums usually have large service rooms with rows of seating for mourners. Today, many have sound systems allowing music to be played, and some have large screens to show photos and video footage of your loved one.

A cremation service typically lasts 30-40 minutes. It can be religious or non-religious and led by a minister or celebrant. The service can be tailored to include readings, music, hymns, and prayers.

At the very end of the service is the committal, which is the moment in which you say a final goodbye to your loved one before they are removed from sight by lowering the coffin or drawing a curtain around the coffin.

Alternatively, you can choose for the coffin to remain in place and for mourners to file past the deceased, perhaps to place a hand on the coffin, and to say their goodbyes as they leave the service room.

If you would prefer a church service, this can also be arranged, with the deceased transported to the crematorium at the end of the service for the final committal before cremation.

Unattended Direct Cremation

from £1,480

This is a cremation that takes place without a service or mourners present. It provides a basic coffin and the ashes are returned to you afterwards. Some families choose to arrange their own service at a later date for the scattering or interment of the ashes.

The Cremation Process

The process begins with the necessary legal documentation and the careful identification of the deceased, to ensure that the cremation takes place with the utmost respect and adherence to regulations.

At the end of the service and after the committal, the coffin containing the deceased is gently transferred into the cremation chamber. The chamber is heated to a high temperature, and the body is reduced to ashes over a period of 1.5 to 3 hours.

After cooling, the remains are carefully collected and placed into an ashes urn.

What To Do With The Ashes

After a traditional cremation, the ashes can be scattered in the garden of remembrance at the crematorium on your behalf, or returned to you to keep or for scattering or interment.

Cremation offers a range of meaningful options for families to commemorate their loved one.

Whether you choose to scatter the ashes in a special location, keep them in a beautiful urn at home, or incorporate them into unique keepsakes, cremation provides flexibility and opportunities for personalisation.
